What should we know about kidney infections?
A kidney infection, also known as pyelonephritis, is one of the most common diseases affecting these organs. It is characterized by inflammation of the kidney tissue (renal parenchyma) and renal pelvis, typically caused by bacterial infection.
In over 70% of cases, kidney infections are caused by the bacterium Escherichia coli. Other possible bacterial causes include Proteus, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas species, etc.
Harmful microorganisms often spread in the urinary tract by ascending from the external environment through the urethra, into the bladder, and from there to the kidneys via the ureters.
Bacteria such as staphylococci can also reach the kidneys via the bloodstream from other parts of the body.
A key factor for the development of a kidney infection is the impairment of urine flow from the kidneys. This can be caused by kidney stones (with or without renal colic), anatomical defects in the urinary tract, pregnancy, or, in men, an enlarged prostate gland (benign prostatic hyperplasia). The use of a urinary catheter is another risk factor, allowing microorganisms to enter the urinary tract and cause infection. Additionally, other risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing a kidney infection.
Some bacteria that cause kidney infections can become resistant to treatment, evolving into so-called “L-forms.” In this state, bacteria lose their outer membrane, which most antibiotics target, leaving only the inner cell membrane. This change makes them resistant to antibiotics, allowing them to persist in the urinary tract. These L-forms are believed to be responsible for chronic infections.
Common symptoms of kidney infections include: pain on one or both sides of the lower back (just below the ribs); high fever (38-40°C); chills; nausea; vomiting; cloudy or foul-smelling urine. Urination may also be more frequent than usual, and may be accompanied by pain or discomfort.
How is kidney infection (pyelonephritis) treated?
If you experience any of these symptoms , the most important action is to seek immediate medical attention.
Self-treatment of kidney infections can be dangerous. Based on the information obtained from your examination and test results, your doctor will prescribe an appropriate therapy tailored to your individual needs.
Etiologic treatment (treatment targeting the specific cause of the disease) typically involves administering antibiotics at the correct dose and for a sufficient duration.
For faster and more pronounced results, your doctor may also recommend natural therapeutic agents. These remedies can help enhance the kidneys’ excretory function, promoting the elimination of bacteria and supporting the body in fighting inflammation. To prevent recurrent infections and stimulate healthy kidney function, such remedies are often recommended for at least 3 months.
Neorenal® SR is a product designed to quickly and effectively support the healthy function of the kidneys and urinary system. It helps maintain the normal, sterile environment of the renal pelvis and ureters.
IngredientsNeorenal® SR combines clinically proven ingredients of natural origin that act together to promote kidney and urinary tract health:
Birch leaf extract
Known for supporting kidney and urinary tract function, birch leaves have been used in Europe for centuries to promote a healthy urine production-elimination cycle. Studies highlight the high flavonoid content in birch leaf extract, which serves as a natural source of antioxidants.
The patented Vivache® combination:
Herniaria extract
Herniaria glabra maintains the kidneys’ natural cleansing function and the healthy muscle tone of the urinary tract. Its proven benefits make it a key agent in supporting overall kidney health.
Viburnum opulus extract
Viburnum opulus extract is known for maintaining muscle tone in the urinary tract (due to the compound scopoletin). Additionally, it contains citrate and potassium and exerts antioxidant properties which contribute to kidney health.
American cranberry extract
American cranberry is one of the most researched plants in the context of urinary tract disorders. Studies show that it contains proanthocyanidin which helps maintain the health and function of the urinary tract.
Ursolic acid
Ursolic acid helps sustain a sterile environment in the kidneys and ureters, neutralizes harmful free radicals, and supports normal kidney function. It also potentiates the effectiveness of antibiotics by increasing bacterial sensitivity to them. Ursolic acid exhibits bactericidal properties against common causes of urinary tract infections, such as E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
