The kidneys play a vital role in the human body as part of the genitourinary system.

The kidneys are responsible for excreting the breakdown products of proteins (urea, ammonia), nucleic acids (uric acid), hemoglobin (which gives urine its color), and muscle creatine (creatinine). Many drugs and other foreign substances are also eliminated through urine. Under normal conditions, about 1.5 liters of urine is produced daily, free from blood cells, glucose, proteins, or ketones.
