What we should know about cough?
Cough is a natural protective reflex that helps the body remove mucus or foreign particles from the airways.
The airways (the nose, throat, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs) are an entry point for many infectious microorganisms. As a result, very frequently the respiratory ways are most affected by infections. Coughing occurs when specific receptors in the airways are irritated. These receptors send signals to the brain, which then triggers the cough reflex to expel the irritants. In healthy individuals, coughing effectively clears the airways. However, in inflammation of the airways caused by respiratory infections such as the flu, cold, or other bacterial and viral infections, the cough reflex may not be sufficient to remove accumulated secretions. Coughs can be dry or wet.
A dry cough is not associated with increased production of mucus and is most often due to irritation in the throat and pharynx, causing distressful cough. As the illness progresses, a dry cough may evolve into a wet one.

However, the mucus is often thick and sticky, making it harder to clear. This leads to mucus buildup, which can obstruct breathing and worsen the infection.
