Neoralit SR

WHAT IS NEORALIT SR

NEORALIT SR is a citric salt of the chemical element potassium, which is necessary for maintaining the acid-base balance in the body and for the proper functioning of vital organs such as the heart and the kidneys.

HOW DOES NEORALIT SR ACT

NEORALIT SR provides the body with potassium and citric ions in the form of prolonged release tablets, ensuring gradual uptake of active substances in the body, maintenance of relatively steady concentrations of the active substances, improved tolerability and reduced risk of gastric irritation. Potassium citrate is metabolised into carbonate in the liver, which results in increased blood and urine alkalinity. This is particularly beneficial in patients suffering from conditions associated with acidic blood and urine.

WHO IS NEORALIT SR INTENDED FOR

NEORALIT SR is intended for people with insufficient potassium in the diet and for improving conditions associated with acidic blood and urine and its consequences.

WHO SHOULD NOT TAKE NEORALIT SR

NEORALIT SR is not recommended for use in cases of:

  • • hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the tablet. The most common symptoms of allergy include rash, itching, swelling of the lips and face and shortness of breath.

Consult your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms.

  • high blood potassium levels
  • heart failure
  • renal failure
  • urino-genital infection

WHAT SHOULD I TELL MY DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING TO TAKE NEORALIТ SR

Please inform your doctor if:

You have any of the following:

  • untreated diabetes
  • Addison’s disease
  • serious soft tissue injury such as severe burns
  • gastric or duodenal ulcer
  • severe dehydration
  • chronic diarrhoea
  • ischemic heart disease or previous heart attack
  • swelling of the feet and legs (e.g. ankle oedema)
  • high blood pressure
  • pregnancy, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding
  • obstruction of the oesophagus, stomach or bowels.

If you use any of the following substances:
aspirin, diuretics, products containing potassium, salt substitutes, steroids, anti-hypertensive drugs, quinidine, anti-acid drugs, methenamine or ACE inhibitors (Captopril, Enalapril, Benazepril)

The above list may be incomplete, so you should tell your doctor about all medicines, vitamins, minerals, herbal products and food supplements that you are taking. Do not start taking any new medicine without consulting your doctor.

WHAT ARE THE ADVERSE EFFECTS OF NEORALIT SR

In the recommended doses, potassium citrate is usually well tolerated. During the first few days of treatment, you may experience gastric discomfort, nausea, vomiting or loose stool while the body adapts to the agent. You should inform your doctor if any of the above symptoms persists or becomes severe and in case of stomach pain, weakness, muscle pain, accelerated or irregular heart rate, shortness of breath, stiffness or cramping of the limbs, irritability, an unpleasant taste in the mouth or black and shiny faeces.

HOW TO TAKE NEORALIT SR

ОUsually NEORALIT SR is taken three times a day in a dose dependent on the individual patient’s needs. Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor, 2 tablets of NEORALIT SR should be taken three times daily during meals or half an hour after meals. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water (240 mL). Increased fluid intake (2 – 3 litres daily) is recommended during treatment with NEORALIT SR. Do not chew or break the tablets. Do not lie down for at least half an hour after taking the tablet. If you miss a dose, take the prescribed dose as soon as you remember. If you remember too late when it is about time for your next dose, wait until the time to take your next dose, omitting the missed dose. Never take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

Measure the pH or your urine twice daily in the morning and evening using test strips and strictly follow the instructions printed on the test strip package for reading the pH values correctly. If after 3 days of treatment with the product urine pH values are still outside the normal physiological range (6.0-7.0), increase the daily dose by taking one additional tablet of NEORALIT SR each time you are due to take the product, i.e. increase the dose by 3 additional tablets daily. The effect of increasing the dose should be re-evaluated after three days. The dose adjustment should be repeated as many times as needed to achieve the desired therapeutic results.

Monitor urine acidity on a daily basis throughout the course of treatment using the test strips.

Do not take more than 20 tablets per day!

Strictly follow the instructions given to you by your doctor!

In case of overdose, call a doctor immediately. Symptoms of overdose usually include heavy limbs, muscle weakness, stiffness, slow or irregular heart rate and a feeling of loss of consciousness.

FURTHER INFORMATIONАлкализиране на урината

Potassium citrate is used for alkalising urine and increasing the solubility of kidney stones formed at acidic pH values, i.e. uric acid and calcium-oxalate stones.

Increasing the alkalinity of urine up to the physiological pH values ranging from 6.0 to 7.0 influences a number of diseases associated with acidic urine including gout, renal tubular acidosis and urolithiasis.
