new-born babyNEOPHOLIC contains 0.4 mg of folic acid and is specially intended for use in pregnant women and in women planning to become pregnant.

Folic acid takes part in the building of all new cells in the body.

This is important both for the mother and for the unborn baby. Sufficient folic acid in the body of the expectant mother may prevent congenital defects of the spinal column and the brain (spina bifida) in the newborn baby.

Folic acid also offers health benefits for the mother herself. The formation of new, healthy cells with the participation of folic acid is very important for the proper functioning of the heart, skin regeneration and hair and nail growth. Folic acid deficiency may impair the formation of red blood cells (erythrocytes), clinically manifested as anaemia. Folic acid is therefore recommended for use by every woman each day, regardless of whether she is pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Do not start taking NEOPHOLIC if:

  • you have ever experienced an allergic reaction to folic acid or to any of the other ingredients of the tablet. The most common symptoms of allergy include rash, itching, swelling of the face and lips and shortness of breath. Consult your doctor if you develop any of these symptoms

Please consult your doctor if:

  • You were born with spina bifida
  • You have had a previous abnormal pregnancy and as a result your child was born with spina bifida, or with another neural tube defect.
  • You suffer from epilepsy and are on phenobarbital, phenytoin, or pyrimidone treatment.
  • You take medicines which inhibit folic acid metabolism, i.e. methotrexate, trimethoprim, or medicines which decrease folic acid absorption from the gastrointestinal tract: contraceptives and anticonvulsants.
  • You have undergone surgical resection of your small intestine.

These conditions require the use of larger doses of folic acid.

mother with childThe required daily amount of folic acid is 0.2 milligrammes (200 microgrammes). During pregnancy, this required daily amount increases. A dose of 0.4 milligrammes has been approved in practices all over the world as a sufficient daily dose to compensate for the increased demand for folic acid in pregnant women. Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor, take 1 tablet of NEOPHOLIC daily.

Do not forget to take your daily dose. In order to avoid missing a daily dose, make the intake of NEOPHOLIC a part of your daily routine like brushing your teeth, taking your dog for a walk, drinking your morning coffee, taking a shower or combing your hair.

In order to provide the mother’s body with a sufficient amount of folic acid at the time of conception, it is recommended that you start taking NEOPHOLIC at least 1 month before you become pregnant and continue taking it during the first three months of gestation. If your pregnancy has not been planned in advance, you should start taking NEOPHOLIC as soon as you find out that you are pregnant. As it is difficult to foresee the beginning of pregnancy, it is recommended that you take 1 tablet of NEOPHOLIC daily if you are likely to become pregnant.

Folic acid is a very unstable chemical compound and when exposed to the environment it rapidly loses its biochemical activity and efficacy. If the tablets are kept in a vial or in bulk, the molecules of folic acid will decompose to inactive products when exposed to environmental factors such as heat, light, air, ultraviolet radiation, etc. This means that the shelf life of the tablets cannot exceed two months. When the tablets are sold in blister packs, each tablet is reliably protected from environmental influences. The shelf life of folic acid in blister packs is extended to 2 years. For added security, NEOPHOLIC tablets are sold in blister packs in opaque white foil which provides additional protection from the destructive action of sunlight.

Folic acid is a water soluble chemical compound which does not accumulate in the body but is eliminated within a few hours of intake. In order to keep sufficiently high folic acid levels in the body of the woman and hence of the foetus, folic acid must be taken every day.

The folic acid content of a normal diet is insufficient to protect against neural tube defects, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Only daily supplementation with folic acid has been proved to decrease the risk of neural tube defects, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

As more than 50% of pregnancies are not planned, it is recommended for women to take 1 tablet of Neopholic each day just in case.

Women at risk of having a baby with a congenital neural tube defect need a higher dose of folic acid. If you are in this group, please consult your doctor. You should take 4 mg folic acid daily (10 tablets of Neopholic) as prescribed 1 to 3 months before you become pregnant and during at least the first three months of gestation.

spina bifidaSpina bifida is a serious congenital defect of the spinal column. It affects the spinal cord, the vertebrae, the muscles and the skin which form the spine. The defect appears during the formation of the brain and of the spinal cord during the fourth week of gestation, i.e. six weeks after the last regular menstruation. In most cases it occurs before a woman becomes aware of her pregnancy.

Depending on the severity of spina bifida, the defect may be visible on the newborn baby’s back, but in milder cases no obvious anatomical lesions are present. In the most severe forms the whole spine remains unclosed and the child cannot survive. In milder forms, permanent weakness of the legs, decreased sensitivity and walking difficulties may be present. These forms frequently lead to disabilities. The mildest forms involve urinary incontinence and difficulty in controlling defecation.

Spina bifida can affect the baby of any mother even in cases where there is no family history of such a defect in either of the parents. On average 1 baby in 1000 is affected by spina bifida and another 1 in 1000 is born with some other neural tube defect. Taking 0.4 milligrammes of folic acid for one month before conception and during the first three months of gestation reduces the risk of spina bifida by up to 80%.
